Your treatment is given as an intramuscular injection, using the syringes and needles supplied. Your dose and how often you take it are on your prescription and were set by your doctor from your blood results. Do not change either without speaking to your doctor.
A step-by-step guide, covering everything from preparing your dose to where and how to inject. Open the how-to guide
Your doctor will tell you when to repeat your bloods. Monitoring is not optional on testosterone treatment.
One process. Every base covered.
We would rather you heard these from us than found them later.
Fertility. Testosterone suppresses sperm production and can cause infertility that does not always fully reverse. If you want children now or later, say so at your assessment. It changes the conversation completely, and there are other approaches.
Thickened blood. Testosterone raises red cell production, which raises clotting risk if nobody is watching it.
Prostate. No treatment without a baseline PSA, and none at all if you have known prostate or breast cancer.
Sleep apnoea can get worse on treatment.
Oestrogen conversion can cause breast tenderness or swelling. Manageable, and monitored.
Heart risk has been argued about for years and the evidence still is not settled. Your doctor will discuss it against your own history.
Skin. Acne and oily skin are common early on.
We will not prescribe if you have prostate or breast cancer, untreated severe sleep apnoea, an already raised red cell count, or if you are trying to conceive. And not if your blood tests do not support the diagnosis, however much you would like them to.
This is usually long term. Once you start, your body reduces its own production, so stopping means levels drop back, often lower than before for a while. Worth understanding before you begin rather than after.
Two reasons. First, the law: South African rules on describing prescription medicines to the public are strict, stricter still for anything a pharmacy compounds for one named patient. Second, the honest one: what a treatment does for you depends on your history, exam and results - easy to get wrong from a web page, which is exactly why we don't try.
